  Economic Outlook - Finance Minister Presented the Key Issues in the Economic Policy
Minister of Finance Plamen Oresharski presented the priorities in the government’s economic policy before the participants in the 6th Roundtable of representatives of business and Bulgarian government officials. The forum, entitled Bulgaria’s Economic and Business Outlook to 2010, has been organised by the leading economic magazine, the Economist.

The government’s priorities cover the major spheres of the country’s development and it is important to be reasonably targeted in time, mostly from the perspective of restricted budget opportunities and the necessity for following sustainable macroeconomic policy, said Minister Oresharski in his speech.

In relation to the maintenance of sustainable fiscal position and the creation of conditions for high economic growth, the Minister of Finance assured the participants that the Bulgarian government will further make efforts in the following areas:

  • enhancing the role of the private sector in the economy and keeping public expenditure under 40% of the GDP;
  • cyclically balanced budget;
  • adaptation of taxation policy and structures with a view to enhancing the potential for growth and revenues collectibility.

    The Minister of Finance pointed out that the efforts of the Bulgarian cabinet will be channeled into the implementation of balanced social policy and the efficient absorption of EU funds. He paid particular attention to the programme budgeting as an important model for enhancing the quality of public funding. Oresharski added that in 2006 all Ministries will draft three-year programme budgets taking into account consolidated sector policy.
